Zystinspeicherkrankheit, or Cystinosis, is a rare, inherited lysosomal storage disorder where the amino acid cystine accumulates within cells, forming crystals. This genetic defect primarily affects the kidneys, eyes, and thyroid. Nephropathic cystinosis, the most common form, manifests in infancy with kidney dysfunction (Fanconi syndrome), leading to excessive urination, dehydration, and growth failure. Without treatment, progressive kidney failure typically ensues by age ten. Ocular crystals cause light sensitivity. Other complications include muscle weakness, hypothyroidism, and neurological issues. Early diagnosis and lifelong cysteamine therapy are crucial for slowing disease progression, managing symptoms, and improving patient outcomes, though it does not offer a cure.
