PHI with Periodontal disease
How does this condition affect your private health insurance?
Zahnbetterkrankung, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the tissues supporting the teeth. It begins with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums due to bacterial plaque. If untreated, the inflammation progresses, destroying the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, leading to gum recession, pocket formation, tooth loosening, and ultimately tooth loss. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, and genetics. Symptoms often include bleeding gums, bad breath, and sensitive teeth, significantly impacting oral health and overall well-being if not managed.

Impact on Your Insurance Policy
Duration of Illness (Initial)
Several weeks to months for early stages (gingivitis), progressing over years if untreated into periodontitis.
Duration of Illness (Lifetime)
Chronic, often requiring ongoing management and prone to recurrence if risk factors persist or maintenance is inadequate.
Cost of Treatment (Initial)
Several hundred to over a thousand euros/dollars for initial non-surgical therapy (scaling and root planing), depending on severity.
Cost of Treatment (Lifetime)
Potentially several thousands to tens of thousands of euros/dollars over a lifetime, including maintenance, surgical interventions, and potential tooth replacements (implants, bridges).
Mortality Rate
Extremely low directly from the disease itself; however, it is linked to increased risk for systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes complications.
Risk of Secondary Damages
High; includes tooth loss, jawbone destruction, impaired chewing and speech, aesthetic issues, and increased risk for systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and respiratory infections.
Probability of Full Recovery
High for gingivitis (full reversal). For periodontitis, complete recovery in terms of regaining lost tissue is limited; however, the disease can be successfully managed and arrested, preventing further damage and maintaining oral health with consistent treatment and hygiene.
Underlying Disease Risk
Moderate to high; often co-exists with or is exacerbated by systemic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, and compromised immune systems.
